From Humble Beginnings to CESAFI Mythical Five: The Inspiring Journey of John Regie Dajab
For John Regie V. Dajab, basketball was never just a game—it was a dream shaped by discipline, sacrifice, faith, and an unbreakable will to rise.

Born on August 14, 2002, and raised in Barangay San Vicente, Ormoc City, Leyte, John Regie grew up in a supportive family led by his parents, Allan and Perlly Dajab, both entrepreneurs. As the youngest in the family with an elder sister to look up to, he learned early on the value of perseverance and humility—traits that would later define him both on and off the court.
Where the Love for the Game Began
John Regie’s love affair with basketball started simply—when his father handed him a ball and challenged him to become better each day. That small moment sparked a lifelong passion. His father, a former basketball player himself, became his first coach and greatest inspiration.
Growing up, John Regie also idolized Cebuano basketball legend Dondon Hontiveros, closely watching his games with the Alaska Aces. But it was Kobe Bryant—his relentless “Mamba Mentality”—that left the deepest mark on him. “He taught me to work hard, stay focused, and never settle,” John Regie shared.
The Grind Before the Spotlight
His early basketball journey was far from glamorous. With no formal training at first, John Regie simply played with heart. As his love for the sport deepened, he began joining tryouts during high school, determined to make a name for himself.
Becoming a student-athlete helped sharpen his skills and opened doors to opportunities with local clubs, including the OCCCI team. His breakthrough came when he was selected to represent Ormoc City in EVRAA 2018, the Eastern Visayas regional meet.
Though he thought the journey might end there, destiny had other plans. After an impressive game in Baybay City, Coach Van Parmis noticed his talent and personally invited him to join the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters. Without hesitation, John Regie accepted—and a new chapter began.
That same year, his team captured the CESAFI 2018 High School Championship, a moment he never imagined but one that fueled bigger dreams as he transitioned into collegiate basketball.
Wearing the Blue and Gold with Pride
Representing the University of Cebu Webmasters was more than an honor—it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. “Ever since I was young, I wanted to play for a big university. Wearing the UC jersey hits differently,” he said with pride.
His dedication paid off when he was named to the CESAFI Season 23 Mythical Five, a recognition he considers one of the most meaningful achievements of his career. “It wasn’t just an award—it was validation of all the hard work and sacrifices. My goal has always been to be the best, not just on the court, but in life.”
Among his most unforgettable memories are every championship qualification with the Webmasters—moments etched deeply into his heart. “Reaching the CESAFI finals is never easy. It takes sacrifices from my family, friends, and loved ones. Those moments will stay with me forever.”
Life as a Student-Athlete
Balancing basketball and academics was no easy feat, especially as a Civil Engineering student. His days often started at 4 a.m. for practice and ended at 9 p.m. after classes. Exhaustion was constant, but so was his determination.
“If you really want something to change your life, the tiredness becomes fuel,” he shared. “It pushes you to be better both as an athlete and as a student.”
However, his toughest test came when he suffered ACL injuries on both legs—a devastating blow for any athlete. “It was heartbreaking. It’s hard when life chooses otherwise,” he admitted. Yet, instead of giving up, he leaned on faith. “I trusted God’s plan. Everything happens for a reason.”
Beyond the Game
Graduating in 2026 with a degree in Civil Engineering, John Regie now looks ahead with clarity and purpose. While he still hopes to continue playing basketball, he is currently focused on building his professional career—grateful to have earned the degree he once dreamed of.
To young athletes chasing similar dreams, his message is clear and heartfelt:
“It’s possible to excel in both sports and academics if you learn discipline and time management early. There will be days you want to quit, but having a clear goal makes the sacrifices worth it. Value your education—it prepares you for life beyond the game. And above all, always put God at the center of your life. He knows what’s best for you.”
From a young boy with a basketball in Ormoc City to a CESAFI Mythical Five honoree and college graduate, John Regie Dajab’s journey is proof that with faith, hard work, and heart, dreams—no matter how big—are always within reach.
