“The 40th anniversary of the Sinulog Festival will go back to where it started forty years ago—to its religious roots. The year 2020 will bring a ‘new packaging’ of Sinulog, something more socially modern and relevant but still very much religiously traditional.”

This is what the new Sinulog Governing Board (SGB) assured the Cebuanos as they look forward to address different areas of improvements and to implement new innovative and creative ideas to make the highly-anticipated annual Sinulog—an even bigger and better festival for the year 2020—and hopefully for the succeeding years.

In a recent press conference spearheaded by Cebu City Sinulog Governing Board (CCSGB) executive director Barney Borja, together with Cebu’s famous choreographer Val Sandiego and award-winning Cebuano industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue—the SGB revealed their promising plans to the local media as they embark on a formidable goal that targets “a revitalized image of the Sinulog festival” by identifying areas of improvement to highlight mechanics of performances and create targeted side events to further expand the festival’s entertainment parameter as well as to provide renewed appeal to its target markets most especially those existing foreign ones.

Last August 23, Cebu City Mayor Edgardo Labella officially handed over the huge responsibility to SGB through a signed executive order which mandates the new organization to work in its full potential for a successful, peaceful and well-ordered Sinulog celebration. Mayor Labella is also adamant that Cebu City’s earmarked P25 million annual budget for Sinulog should be properly spent.

Sinulog 2020 project director, Val Sandiego, clarified that the SGB did not omit any pre-existing activity but rather added new ones such as the Sinulog sa Palaboy, Sinulog Market Street Fair, a vlogging contest and a drum and bugle contingent to top it all. Sandiego also stated that street parties will once again be allowed but will now be closely monitored and regulated to ensure peace and order for the duration of the Sinulog celebration.

SGB’s predecessor, the Sinulog Foundation Inc (SFI), who have previously managed and organized the festival for the last 35 years is also expected to work closely and to coordinate with SGB. “The SGB will serve as the regulatory board that will oversee SFI and its executive committee and has the right to review and approve all resolutions and actions of the SFI’s executive committee.” SGB’s press release stated.

Moreover, As far as the executive order is concerned, the SGB will compliment the functions of the SFI and will focus on coordinating with the concerned agencies and entities to ensure the smooth implementation of the core activities, thus the SGB will organize the festival and its other activities. It will coordinate with the concerned agencies to oversee the peace and order situation.

The Sinulog Governing Board is confident that a well-coordinated installment of the festival under its management is possible to take effect as it carries vital agencies under its wing including the Sinulog Foundation, Inc. (SFI), Philippine National Police (PNP), Department of Education (DepEd), Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Department of Health (DOH), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño.
