University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters managed to stay in contention for the 1st Uy Masuy Cup title after ending the hopes of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) Season 19 champion Southwestern University (SWU) Phinma Cobras, 99-89, Saturday, February 15, 2020, at the Cebu City Sports Institute gym in Barangay Sawang Calero.

After losing their first game against the IPL Geckos, 76-66, last Friday, February 14, the UC Webmasters, who is now helmed by come-backing head coach, Atty. Kenneth “Kernn” Sesante, made sure to bounce back and earn a chance to bag the title.

After a tentative start, the Webmasters managed to take a two-point lead, 46-44, going into the halftime break against the Cobras, who was playing without its foreign student-athlete, Lamine Thiam.

The lead then went back and forth in the third quarter which UC managed to end with a slim lead, 70-69.

But UC opened the final canto with a 6-point lead boosted by two triple plays from its foreign student-athlete Tosh Sesay for a 78-72 score with still eight minutes remaining in the ballgame.

SWU Phinma’s Red Cachuela and Heider Bilao managed to forge a tie at 78-all.

Paul Galinato gave UC back the lead at 80-78 but Sir Shaquille Imperial brought it back to a deadlock at 80-all.

That was, however, the last hurrah for the Cobras as Galinato and Sesay combined to give UC a 10-point lead, 91-81.

Despite the efforts of Cacheula and Imperial, SWU Phinma eventually bowed out of contention.

The University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers, for their part, are just one win away from clinching the title.

This, after they notched their second straight win, 103-101, against the IPL Geckos.

They will face the UC Webmasters for their last game and should they win, they will automatically become the champions.

If not, they will get into a tie with UC. UV now has a 2-0 win-loss record while UC has a 1-1 card.

Should the IPL Geckos also win against SWU Phinma in their last game, a triple tie will ensue for the title which will be broken by the quotient system.

This because the tournament follows a single round robin format with the team having the most number of wins to be declared as the champion.

IPL Geckos also tote a 1-1 card while the SWU Phinma is already out of the running after also losing to UV, 89-86, in their first game.
